Terms of Use
Last updated: 22 October 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Anatolii Kataev, an individual developer in Yerevan, Armenia, who makes Sumo Japanese (“we”, “us”), for using the Sumo Japanese apps and website. By creating a profile or using Sumo Japanese you accept them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use Sumo Japanese.
Your account
- You must be at least 13 years old to use Sumo Japanese.
- Give accurate information, keep your password to yourself and tell us at support@sumojapanese.app if you think someone else has used your account.
- You can delete your account at any time in the app or at sumojapanese.app/delete-account.
Sumo Pro subscriptions
- Sumo Japanese is free to use. Sumo Pro is an optional auto-renewing subscription (monthly or yearly). The price and any free trial are shown before you buy.
- A free trial turns into a paid subscription when it ends unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the trial.
- Subscriptions renew automatically at the same price and period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You are charged within 24 hours before each renewal.
- On iPhone and iPad, payment is charged to your Apple ID and you manage or cancel in your Apple ID subscription settings. On Android, payment is charged to your Google Play account and you manage or cancel in Google Play → Payments & subscriptions. On the web, you manage or cancel in Settings → Subscription.
- Refunds for App Store and Google Play purchases follow Apple’s and Google’s policies. For web purchases, write to support@sumojapanese.app.
- Koban (the in-app coins) are earned by learning only. They can’t be bought, sold or exchanged for money.
Community rules — zero tolerance
Your display name, username and avatar are visible to other learners. There is no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. You must not use names, avatars or behaviour that are offensive, hateful, sexual, violent, harassing or that impersonate Sumo Japanese, its team or anyone else.
You can report a learner and block them from their profile. We review reports, usually within 24 hours, and may reset names or avatars, remove content and suspend or delete accounts that break these rules.
Fair use
- Use Sumo Japanese for your own learning. Don’t cheat the banzuke with scripts or multiple accounts, interfere with the service, or try to access other people’s data.
- Don’t copy, scrape or redistribute the course content, or reverse-engineer the apps, except where the law allows it.
Our content
The course, texts, audio, illustrations, the Tarō character and the software belong to Sumo Japanese or its licensors. We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable licence to use them for learning while you follow these terms. Some material comes from third parties under its own licence: for example, the stroke-order drawings of kana and kanji are based on KanjiVG (© Ulrich Apel and contributors, CC BY-SA 3.0), which stays under that licence.
Ending the agreement
You can stop using Sumo Japanese and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end access if you seriously or repeatedly break these terms, and will tell you why unless the law or safety prevents it. Paid time left on a subscription is handled under the store’s or our refund policy.
Disclaimers and liability
Sumo Japanese is an educational tool. We work hard on accurate content and a reliable service, but we provide Sumo Japanese “as is” and can’t guarantee it will always be available or error-free. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law.
Apps from the App Store
- These terms are between you and us, the developer of Sumo Japanese, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content and has no obligation to provide maintenance or support.
- If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple for a refund of the purchase price (if any); to the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation.
- Apple is not responsible for any claims relating to the app, including product liability, legal or regulatory compliance, consumer protection or intellectual-property claims; we are.
- Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms and may enforce them against you. You confirm you are not in a country subject to a U.S. embargo and not on any U.S. list of prohibited or restricted parties.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Armenia. If you use Sumo Japanese as a consumer, this doesn’t take away the protection of the mandatory consumer laws of the country where you live, and you can also bring a claim in the courts there.
Changes and contact
We may update these terms; for significant changes we’ll tell you in the app in advance. Continuing to use Sumo Japanese after that means you accept the new terms. Sumo Japanese is made by Anatolii Kataev, an individual developer in Yerevan, Armenia. Questions: support@sumojapanese.app.
